Interview: Making 'The Master' with Poster Artist Dustin Staton (response)

After reading over the interview with poster artist Dustin Staton, I realized that I did not understand how much thought and dedication go into creating a movie poster. Personally, I never thought too much about the cover of a movie, I just wanted to watch the movie. I would look at the poster maybe and think it was nice, but it was just a passing thought. I also did not notice how movies have more than one poster, such as the teaser and the final copy. Now that I am taking this graphic design class, I can relate to Staton when he talks about having to come up with more than one idea and deciding which idea fits well. For instance, when starting a new project, I have to come up with ten different sketches. I had to do this too in my high school graphic design class. Movie Poster Prompt

My personal favorite movie poster is the cover of Adventures in Babysitting. The reason why I adore this poster is mainly because of the color and how it pops. It really grabs your attention where you cannot stop staring at it. The style of it is almost cartoonish which gives it character and you can tell this was made in the 90s, so you know it's good. The different facial expressions of each character gives you an idea of their personalities. Just seeing them on the side of a building makes you wonder just how crazy of an adventure they must have had to end up there. The font for the title was a really good choice, big and bold, just like the movie. The last thing I want to mention is the main character's scarf. There's something about it that captures my eye. I like how it's a rainbow, it works well with the coloring of this poster. I also love how it flows in the wind, it just looks so badass to me.

First Day Questions (answers)

My previous computer experience is Adobe Illustrator in Graphic Design. What I hope to get out of this class is to become more familiar with the computer and using different programs to support my ideas for animation. I would also like to strengthen my drawing skills. I do not have any experience with Photoshop. I took a Graphic Design class my senior year in high school and did different projects with Adobe Illustrator. I also did a project with InDesign. I have a PC at home and my own personal mac, but neither have Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator. I mostly use mac now. With my major I hope to eventually create my own animated series. At the very least, be apart of a company. I have many favorite artists since they all have their own unique talents. If I had to pick one, it would be Rachel Smyth who both wrote and drew Lore Olympus on Webtoon. I recently learned Greek Mythology and find it very interesting so when I found this I had to read it.
